Our Religious School is growing in numbers, quality, and strength of community, as JCOH students develop joy in their Jewish identity under the direction of Director of Education and Programming Shelley Lichtenstein, with Rabbi Zimmerman, Cantor Stein and our our dedicated faculty. We encourage our post-B'nai Mitzvah students to continue as classroom assistants. Most of our classes have at least one teen, teacher assistant.
Religious School Mission Statement
The mission of the Religious School of The Jewish Center of the Hamptons is to foster and instill a sense of Jewish identity by introducing our children to Jewish culture, tradition and values,to Torah study, history, prayers, to the Hebrew language, and Israel.
Our goal is to create lifelong learners and encourage a long term commitment to Judaism and Israel as the Jewish homeland as well as to prepare our students to become participants in our congregation’s worshiping community.
We believe that each student must be treated as an individual, be allowed to become an active participant in the learning process, and know that his/her ideas will be treated with respect. We believe that all Jewish children should receive a Jewish education to the best of their ability, including those students with special needs. We strive to create a community which encourages respect and understanding of other religions and cultures as well as our own diverse community. We promote a sense of community within the classroom, Religious School and synagogue community. We believe that family involvement is essential to the success of our program. We therefore encourage parents to participate in their children’s Jewish education as well as to actively pursue their own Jewish growth and learning.
Tikun Ha’Olam – Repairing the World--is an integral part of our curriculum. We endeavor to develop a commitment to and sense of responsibility for all Jewish communities and people of all religions.
We hope to enable each student, family and faculty member to find his/her way to a personal and communal relationship with the Holy One, with whom we are covenanted to become a holy people and a blessing to all the peoples of the world.
Our Religious School program includes preparation for B’nai Mitzvah, leadership program, field trips, religious and Hebrew school classes from toddler to confirmation. There are Shabbat dinners and Havdallah dinners, theater productions, education programs, art and projects. For our 50th Anniversary Jubilee Torah Project, each child had a chance to write a Hebrew letter in a new Torah.
